Organoelement compounds as cysteine protease inhibitors and beyond.

The study of metal and metalloid compounds in therapeutics led to some useful prototypes for understanding the role of element compounds in a biological context. In contrast, organoelement compounds have been scarcely studied. As protease inhibitors, among few other examples, it is known the action of Ruthenium(II), Palladium(II), Gold(I) and Gold(III), Selenium(IV) and Tellurium(IV) compounds mainly towards cysteine proteases. The reactivity features of organic derivatives of these elements will be presented and discussed with major emphasis on selenium(IV) and tellurium(IV) compounds which have been the main focus of our current interests.
